Japanese encephalitis immunization set in Baguio

THE BAGUIO Health Department (BHD) is set to conduct a mass immunization for Japanese encephalitis (JE) in barangays.

BHD head Dr. Rowena Galpo explained JE are the same mosquito which transmits dengue.

“We are going to have a free mass immunization for Japanese Encephalitis in February for children not only for students, but for the community,” Galpo said.

The disease is spread through mosquito bites, with symptoms usually taking five to 15 days to develop and includes fever, headache, vomiting, confusion, and difficulty in moving.

Symptoms that develop later include swelling around the brain and coma. JE is a serious disease that may cause death.

Aedes aegypti, the yellow fever mosquito, is a mosquito that can spread dengue fever, chikungunya, Zika fever, Mayaro and yellow fever viruses, and other disease agents.

The mosquito can be recognized by white markings on its legs and a marking in the form of a lyre on the upper surface of its thorax.

This mosquito originated in Africa, but is now found in tropical, subtropical and temperate regions throughout the world.

“We have recorded JE cases here in the city but these cases were referrals from another place. There was one case who explained that this was a homegrown, meaning the mosquito is from here and this is where the mosquito was bitten. We still encourage the practice of healthy lifestyle so as to prevent people from acquiring diseases like JE,” Galpo added.
