Councilors sound alarm over spate of killing in Oro

CAGAYAN de Oro City Councilor Leon Gan on Monday, January 7, hit his fellow councilors for downplaying the security situation of the city.

Gan, reacting to statements of Councilor Ian Mark Nacaya and Romeo Calizo that there is a decline of crimes in the city, said they “must have been dreaming.”

“Gadamgo siguro sila sa nahitabo, tataw na nga dili isolated, ug angayan ikaguol nato ang nahitabo sa syudad karon kay ang patay mahitabo bisan asa nalang ug dili basta-basta,” Gan said.

In his special report, Councilor Teodulfo Lao Jr. raised alarm bells over the spate of killings observed here and urged the police to explain.

But in response, Calizo said there is actually a decline of crimes here, but this record “has been tainted by incidents of highlighted personalities.”

Calizo said the killings are not a cause for panic.

Councilor Nacaya agreed and said the killings are only a few and are isolated cases.

“This is not much of a concern,” Nacaya added.

For his part, Gan said there has been a number of killings here involving residents, aside from the big personalities who only make it to news headlines.

Gan advised Lao to address his report instead to City Mayor Oscar Moreno, which he called as the “number one police in the city.”

“Naa gyud ta sa makuyaw nga sitwasyon karon kung dili tutukan sa mga dagko nga officials sa dakbayan,” he added.
