BUDAPEST is the capital of Hungary, the heart of Europe. Showcasing old-world grandeur and modern vibrancy, this cosmopolitan European city offers the best of both worlds. Divided magnificently on both sides of the Danube river, each fairy-tale cityscape will leave you breathless with its own charm.

Fisherman’s Bastion

The majestic Fisherman’s Bastion appears like a fantasy castle with its conical towers, omnipresent statues, and whitewashed staircase.

Those who ascend the palatial steps to the tower not only enjoy a balmly breeze and an all-encompassing panoramic view of the Budapest skyline, but also get a glimpse of how Buda and Pest were equally separated by the Danube river. The neo gothic terrace was named after the medieval guild of fishermen who secured Budapest from invasion.

Historic monuments

The most prominent landmark is Matthias Cathedral, a Romanesque Catholic church. What I absolutely adored about the church was its colourful diamond-patterned roofs against the whitewashed walls of the Fisherman’s Bastion; the roof glowed under the sunlight. Behind the walls was the grandest sight of all, the Hungarian Parliament Building. The massive icon is considered a masterpiece from all angles, a perfect symbol of beauty and power.

St. Stephen’s Basilica, the largest church of Budapest, was built in honor of Hungary’s first king. King Stephen was a monarch who led his country to embrace the Christian faith. In fact, Hungarians loved him so much that they kept his right hand on display in reliquary for all to see. One thing to do here is to climb up the highest tower to get a sprawling 360-degree view of the entire state.

Hungarian Market Hall

This is where you find the best souvenirs in town. There are thousands of varieties with the best prices. You will also find local products of all kinds. Situated in an old palace-style building, rows of fresh items like fruits, vegetables and lots of paprika are found on the first floor. The second floor mostly consists of magnets, which I collect, and plenty other quirky things perfect for pasalubongs.
