4,000 runners hit the streets for Cebu Marathon

FOUR thousand runners will hit the streets of Cebu for the 12th edition of the Cebu Marathon on Sunday, Jan. 13, which will start and end at the Cebu Business Park.

The annual race organized by Cebu Executive Runners Club (CERC) as one of the activities for Sinulog Festival is all set with a total of 4,216 participants in the 42-kilometer, 21K and 5K categories.

“We are all set with the race. We have completed the coordination meeting with all the groups and sectors involved. What we are praying now is for good weather. But rain or shine, we are all good to go,” CERC president Kenneth Casquejo told SunStar Cebu.

Hundreds of volunteers, medical personnel, security, police force, traffic personnel and marshals are all ready to be deployed for the race. The organizers are asking the commuters to bear with them for the duration of the race.

“All the roads that are part of the route are passable, only half of the roads will be used by the runners. The run will be ongoing from 3 a.m. to 9 a.m. but there are parts of the roads that will be clear as early as 7 a.m.,” said Casquejo.

He added that if it’s possible for the commuter to avoid these roads, it would be better, so that they will not be hit by traffic.

As usual, the race will have entertainment along the route with bands and various activities done. There will be entertainment also in some of the water stations.

Cebu City Councilor Joel Garganera has contacted the LGBT community to entertain runners in one of the water stations. Cebuana Olympian Mary Joy Tabal will also be on the road to cheer on the runners in the Motor Ace Kawasaki water station.

The race will start earlier than usual with the gun start for the 42K moved to 3 a.m. It will be followed by the 21K at 3:30 a.m and the 5K at 4:30 a.m. RSC
