Suspected NPA rebels torch passenger bus

SUSPECTED New People’s Army (NPA) rebels torched a passenger bus for alleged non-payment of revolutionary taxes in Zamboanga del Norte Wednesday night, police said.

An SSG Liner Bus travelling from Salug to Godod town in Zamboanga del Norte was waylaid by five armed men who claimed to be NPA rebels around 8 p.m. in the village of Pucay, Salug.

Chief Superintendent Emmanuel Luis Licup, Police Regional Office-Zamboanga Peninsula director, said the men reportedly ordered the driver Deonilo Bucan, 48, and his truck men Leo Lomondaya, 28; Nelson Ambahang, 28; and, Celso Ambahang, 33, to alight from the bus.

The men then told the driver that the bus had been passing the area without paying revolutionary taxes and set the bus ablazed.

The bus was loaded with fertilizers, feeds, sardines, soft drinks, dried fish, hollow blocks, sacks of rice and corn and seven containers of gasoline at the time of the incident. (SunStar Philippines)
