MCWD to set up septage treatment facility in Cordova, north recla

THE Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD) will establish two septage treatment facilities (STFs) following the signing of a tripartite memorandum of agreement with the Cebu Provincial Government and the Cebu City Government.

The document signing for the Septage Management Program of Metro Cebu between the MCWD and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica) was held on Friday, Jan. 11, in the Dignitaries Hall at the Capitol.

The signing was led by MCWD general manager Jose Eusebio Singson Jr. and Hiromichi Murakami, senior deputy director general of Global Environmental Department of Jica.

Gov. Hilario Davide III, who sits as chairman of the Metro Cebu Development and Coordinating Board, and Norihiko Nomura, director general of the Environmental Planning Bureau of the City of Yokohamo, Japan, served as witnesses.

According to MCWD spokesperson Charmaine Rodriguez-Kara, they will submit all required documents to Jica, including local ordinances supporting the P1-billion project, which is expected to be completed in 2021.

The first STF will be in Barangay San Miguel, Cordova with a capacity of 150 cubic meters daily to process waste from septic tanks in houses and establishments in the cities of Lapu-Lapu and Cordova.

The second STF will be located in a 1.3-hectare lot owned by the Provincial Government at the North Reclamation Area in Cebu City. It will be capable of treating 500 cubic meters of sludge/waste that will be collected from commercial and industrial establishments in the cities of Cebu, Talisay and Mandaue and the towns of Consolacion, Liloan and Compostela.
