Demecillo starts training

KENNY Demecillo kicks off his training today for the biggest fight of his career.

“I just arrived here in Cebu. I’ll be starting my training on Monday,” said Demecillo.

The 26-year-old Demecillo just returned to Cebu City on Saturday, Jan. 12, and will immediately be honing his craft at the Omega Boxing Gym for a huge fight that will be his key to a world title shot.

“I’ll be starting light training because this is my first coming off from a vacation. Next week, I’ll be starting the heavy training,” he said.

Demecillo is up against International Boxing Organization (IBO) bantamweight king Michael Dasmarinas in an all-Filipino International Boxing Federation (IBF) bantamweight title eliminator on March 29 in Singapore.

The winner gets the No. 1 spot and a mandatory shot at the IBF bantamweight belt, which is currently held by Emmanuel Rodriguez.

Demecillo will start sparring next month and will be looking for a southpaw sparring partner at the RWS Gym in Labangon.

The 26-year-old Dasmarinas is a heavy-handed southpaw. He knocked out three of his last four opponents in the last two years. He dropped experienced Filipino Mateo Handig in the 10th round, stopped Worawatchai Boonjan in two rounds and knocked out former world title challenger Karim Guerfi in just four rounds.

Demecillo has seen his fair share of wars. His fights have always been nothing but excitement for boxing fans. The highlights of his career are both his knockout wins over former amateur standout Daryl Basadre and his recent upset knockout win over previously undefeated VyacheslavMirzaev.

Demecillo is 14-4-2 with eight knockouts, while Dasmarinas is 28-2-1 with 19 knockouts.

Also seeing action in the undercard is Singapore-based coach Rey Caitom.

Caitom (7-0-1, 2 KOs), a native of Mandaue City, takes on Indian prospect Hans Raj Thakur (3-1, 1 KO). (EKA)
