Will it be a damp day come Sunday?

A RAINY Sinulog grand parade is expected on Sunday, Jan. 20 as a low pressure area is expected to affect Cebu over the weekend.

Because of the weather disturbance, Cebu City Councilor Dave Tumulak said heads of different contingents joining the Sinulog grand parade are advised to prepare.

“Based on the models available, there will be a 40 percent chance that it will develop into a tropical depression. Rain will start on Friday. We informed the contingents to make contingency measures especially on street dancing,” he said.

Tumulak, who also chairs the executive committee of the Sinulog Foundation Inc. (SFI), said the grand parade will push through if the city will experience only rains on Sunday, Jan. 20.

“If there will be a typhoon, we will still have to agree on it. There is no decision yet (on whether the grand parade will push through or not),” he said.

A total of 30 dancing contingents will perform during the grand parade. Twenty-four are joining the competition while six are guest contingents.

Guest contingents include the performers from the Cebu City Government, Cebu Province, Wonju Dynamic Dancing Carnival from South Korea, San Diego dancers, Team Police Regional Office 7 and Tangub Sinanduloy Cultural Troupe.

Apart from the dancing contingents, there will also be 24 higantes, 10 puppeteers and 42 floats that will join the parade.

The grand parade will start at 8 a.m. and is expected to finish at 6 p.m.

For a smooth flow of the parade, Tumulak urged photographers not to block the contingents performing along the route.

Tumulak said it was observed that photographers caused the little delay during the Sinulog sa Kabataan over the weekend.

During the grand parade, the councilor said police personnel will not allow photographers without official identification cards from SFI or those who are not joining the photo contest to be in the route of the contingents.

“But even if they have IDs, as long as they will block the contingents, our PNP personnel were already given instructions not to allow it,” he said. (RVC)
