City volleybelles grab Caraa championship

LAGAWE, Ifugao – Baguio volleybelles bucked the scorching heat of Ifugao blasting Apayao in their championship match to secure the crown in the secondary level.

Baguio won the match via a three set decider, 25–26, 26–24, 25–23, and earned the gold at the close of the 2010 Cordillera Administrative Region Athletic Association (Caraa) at the Don Bosco High School here.

The Summer Capital volleybelles, which lost the crown last year to land third, enjoyed a twice to beat advantage going into the finals after winning four straight games.

Apayao, on the other hand, entered the finals through the back door by beating Abra, then Benguet to arrange the title showdown. “Last year lang talaga kami hindi pumasok sa championship but ever since naman eh consistent talaga ang Baguio,” said coach Ortez Gabol.

Apayao tried to regain the upperhand in the ballgame after trailing by seven in the second set and looked poised to get one over Baguio as it only need a point to close the set, 24–22.

But the Baguio girls proved their mettle inside the court, outscoring Apayao in the last four plays to eke out a 26–24 second set win.

From then on, Baguio seized the lead at the start of the third set and closed out a fighting Apayao six.

“We made adjustments sa rotation ng mga players kaya biglang nahabol yung kalamangan,” Gabol added.

In the elementary side, Ifugao held on to their homecourt advantage by beating Baguio City in the finals match while Apayao took the third place finish while Benguet had it in the secondary level.

Benguet won the elementary boys division while Mt. Province and Kalinga settled for second and third.

As of this writing Baguio and Benguet are still squaring off in the finals match for the secondary boys while Mt. Province already took the third place finish.
