Tell it to SunStar: Waste disposal

I’M sorry to say that our government officials only know how to react after the fact or when something wrong has happened. An example is the medical waste whose disposal they didn’t monitor until these showed up in rivers and in the sea. After that, the blame game began.

The health department knows that every hospital in the country has medical waste and it is their job to monitor their disposal. In the old days every hospital was required to have an incinerator where all medical waste was burnt to keep the public safe.

The blame need to also be put on the Department of Health for failing to monitor the movement of medical waste. Here in northern Cebu, septic tanks are cleaned every day and the truck loads of contaminated materials are dumped--but where? We have no sewage facilities here so I wonder where they are putting those materials. Are they dumping these where these can contaminate our drinking water or our oceans or where our fish supply comes from?

Let us all get on the ball and be the eyes and ears for the Department of Health to do a better job and make our country a healthier and safer place to live.--Freddie Acopan

Traffic mess near the Basilica

With the novena masses held a number of times daily at the BasilicaMinore del Sto. Niño, traffic has become a problem on the streets around and near it. Despite the vow of the Cebu City Transportation Office to be strict, vehicles still park on the side of those roads contributing to the traffic mess.

And why hasn’t a rerouting scheme put in place to ease vehicular traffic in those areas. I am sure this would worsen as the fiesta nears.--Tirso Algonzalo of Cebu City
