Baciwa board approves Prime Water's unsolicited proposal for joint venture

CLAUDIO Salmo, president of the Bacolod City Water District (Baciwa) Employees Union, said on Tuesday, January 15, that the board has approved the unsolicited proposal of Prime Waters for a 25-year joint venture contract.

The joint venture contract involves the management and water distribution of Baciwa, Salmo said.

Salmo said that another company, the Metro Pacific, was already disqualified after they failed on the eligibility requirement while the other company, the Manila Waters, will have a chance to join in the Swiss Challenge after the negotiation.

The approval of the Prime Water's unsolicited proposal was done by the Baciwa board during its regular meeting last week.

Salmo said the members of the union are opposed to any form of Baciwa privatization because from Government Service Insurance System that covers government employees, they will be transferred to the coverage of the Social Security System.

Prime Water, he said, may absorb the employees under their new management or opt for optional retirement.

“The Baciwa board has written to the union informing us of the approval of the unsolicited proposal of Prime Water and that we should prepare ourselves for our respective concerns,” Salmo said.

The joint venture contract will be good for 25 years and renewable for another 25 years, Salmo reiterated.

He lamented that the move of the board does not solve the real problem of Baciwa which is the supply.

Meanwhile, Salmo revealed that the two newly appointed directors of the Baciwa board have attended their maiden meetingon Tuesday.

The two directors are Former Bacolod City accountant Eduardo Ravena who represents the professionals and former Baciwa chair Lawrence Ledesma who represents the business sector.

Former councilor Lorendo Dilag remains the chair of the board, Salmo said. (TDE)
