PVO to start rabies control action plan in Fifth District

THE Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) in Negros Occidental will kick off the implementation of its Rabies Control Action Plan in Fifth District.

The district covers the cities of Himamaylan and municipalities of Hinigaran, Binalbagan, Isabela, La Castellana, and Moises Padilla.

Provincial Veterinarian Renante Decena said the district has become the priority in the implementation of the plan.

This is attributed to having the highest occurrence of canine rabies in the province totaling to 18 cases, Decena said.

The figure forms part of the 33 confirmed cases last year, he added.

The concerned local government units (LGUs) agreed to conduct a district–wide simultaneous dog vaccination starting from the high-risk to the border barangays.

It will be conducted until the entire district has been fully saturated.

The conduct of simultaneous dog vaccination aims to cover at least 70 percent of the total dog population in the shortest possible time.

Through which, the spread of rabies virus to other neighboring cities and municipalities will be contained.

PVO said LGUs in Fifth District have been very supportive in implementing strategies and measures to curb rabies threat in the area.

Some cities and towns with higher number of available canine rabies vaccines have expressed their willingness to lend their stocks to other fellow LGUs whose procurement are still on process.

Moreover, an information and education campaign about rabies will also be conducted during dog vaccination in every barangay.

PVO will create a team composed of veterinarians and other personnel, who will assist in the vaccination activity and information and education campaign.

Decena called on Negrenses to actively participate in the initiatives implemented by their respective local governments.

"In order to control or eradicate the spread of the deadly virus, the public should participate through one, by being a responsible pet owners," he added.
