Connecting Davao

OPENING new direct flight destinations to and from Davao City does not just open new tourism opportunities for the city but also increases chances of economic growth and stability.

An English entrepreneur who opened a business in Davao City once told me that frequent travels to different parts of the world, creates new perspective and business ideas for the traveler as he/she is exposed to new innovations that have not yet been tried in his/her local country.

This year, a number of flights from Davao City to new destinations had been opened which paved way for tourists and businessmen alike to explore the city more. Recently, Xiamen Airlines launched the twice-a-week Quanzhou (Jinjian)-Davao-Quanzhou route by Boeing 737-800. Davao is the airline’s fourth destination in the Philippines next to Manila, Cebu, and Kalibo.

The route will fly every Tuesday and Friday, departing from Quanzhou at 9 a.m., arriving in Davao City at 12:15 p.m. and flying back to Quanzhou at 1:15 a.m., arriving at 4:30 p.m.

To support this flight launch, the Consulate General of China in Davao City has now started accepting Chinese visa applications and processing.

Just this year, as well, Cebu Pacific already launched daily flights from Davao to Clark starting November 9, 2018. According to CEB corporate communication director Maria Rosario Lagamon, the linking of Davao to Clark will contribute on locating future economic trade especially of the two cities’ rapid economic growth.

“There are locators in Clark that source their materials from Davao and vice versa, so therefore it would be so much easier to cargo materials with these additional flights,” Lagamon added.

It was also with great excitement that the Dabawenyos received the news that Cathay Pacific launched Davao-Hong Kong flights last October 28. Through the regional airline Cathay Dragon, the Davao-Hong Kong flight will fly eight times a week on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. Cathay Pacific country manager Rob Bradshaw earlier said that they see the Davao-Hong Kong flight to open up a gateway to Hong Kong to other international destinations. This air link specifically allows Davao businessmen to easily access markets in Europe, Africa, Middle East, and North America.

As more and more new domestic and international destinations have opened up and more airline still continue to announce future flights, both the tourism and the trade industry of Davao City is expected to flourish in a bigger scale sooner or later.
