Negros crimes down by 64%

THE Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office (Nocppo) has recorded a crime reduction of 64.14 percent from January to December 2018.

Chief Inspector Edison Garcia, public information officer of Nocppo, said they have recorded 3,064 crimes last year compared to 7,686 cases in 2017, with a reduction of 4,622 crimes.

Garcia said eight focus crimes or crimes against persons or properties decreased by 2,168 cases or 65.82 percent, with 1,126 incidents in 2018 against the 3,294 cases in 2017.

Last year, physical injury topped the eight focus crimes with 373 cases followed by theft with 204; murder, 195; rape, 133; robbery, 107; homicide, 84; motornapping, 28; and carnapping, 2.

For reckless imprudence, 1,390 cases were recorded last year compared to 2,723 incidents in 2017, with a drop of 1,333 or 48.95 percent.

Senior Superintendent Romeo Baleros, officer-in-charge of Nocppo, said he is urging policemen to perform better this year in order to surpass their accomplishments last year.

We need to work harder to attain a more peaceful province, he added.

Meanwhile, the Nocppo official also relayed to Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. during their New Year’s Call on Thursday the issues and concerns of the provincial police.

Based on their presentation, Nocppo has 137 patrol cars, but only 119 vehicles are serviceable used by the city and municipal police stations, and two Mobile Forces, which are catering about 2,497,261 residents in the province.

Of the total number of vehicles, 18 are defective and eventually will be considered “beyond economically repair” due to the insufficiency of funds for its repair.

The provincial police have suggested having their own motor pool for maintenance and repair of their patrol vehicles. (with reports from Christopher Yanson, CHMSC-Talisay intern)
