Boomerang: Sinulog and street parties

FOR some years, the Sinulog was much anticipated, not only because of the festival itself but also because of the numerous street parties that happen on the day of the grand parade. Many people, especially the young, thought this was a great way to celebrate the city’s biggest fiesta. However, there were years when street parties became a venue for mischief and chaos. We heard of people getting mauled or those who passed out because of too much alcohol. Worse, stories of rampant use of illegal substances circulated. Because of those unfortunate incidents, many agreed that street parties have diminished the relevance of the celebration. Today, Zup asks its readers: Are street parties really necessary in our Sinulog celebrations? Read on.

Sinulog is the party itself. That’s what most people probably forget. Maybe we differ in our definition of what parties or street parties should be. I’m not against it. I just think people should be more responsible when going to these events.--Joseph Francis Teves, 27, Registered Nurse/Vlogger (@josephteves youtube @jfzteves IG)

Having been a fun trademark of the Sinulog in the previous years, street parties would be okay if only people are disciplined and respect the religious festival. If street parties would be allowed during the Sinulog, they should be properly regulated and monitored.--James Mathew Alfafara, 19, Maritime Transportation Graduate

Honestly, it’s not necessary to have street parties to enjoy the festival. In my opinion, as a non-Catholic, I kind of got used to the idea of having street parties so other people like me can also enjoy the festival in another way.--Dave Ronniel Quirante, 25, transitional Doctor of Physical Therapy/Content Creator

Celebrating a religious event doesn’t necessarily need to be grand. What truly matters is how it is being understood and reflected on. Festivals can bring happiness to our lives and strengthen our sense of community even without the noisy parties.--April Sophia Maligayo, 19, Optometry Student (SWU-PHINMA)
