FOLLOWING the deaths of San Fernando councilor candidates Reneboy Dacalos and Johnny Arriesgado, only one candidate can be substituted before the May polls.

Renante Angcos, San Fernando municipal election officer, told SunStar Cebu that of the two deceased candidates, only Arriesgado could be substituted since he was affiliated with a national party and was able to present a certificate of nomination and acceptance when he filed his candidacy last year.

Before he was killed, Arriesgado was affiliated with the Nacionalista Party through membership with its district party Alayon.

But Angcos said Arriesgado could only be substituted if his national party would name his replacement and the replacement bore his last name.

Dacalos could not be substituted since he was running as an independent candidate, he said.

Dacalos was an incumbent councilor when he was shot dead in front of the store of his brother-in-law in Barangay South Poblacion two weeks ago.

Arriesgado was the barangay captain of Magsico when he was ambushed by unidentified men in the same barangay on Wednesday, January 16.

San Fernando vice mayoral candidate Ricardo Reluya, president of the town’s Association of Barangay Councils and Arriesgado’s partymate, said they had yet to decide on who to replace Arriesgado with as they were still mourning his death.
