Treating post-Sinulog Monday blues

YOU think Mondays have it bad? Think again.

It’s almost a weekly thing, Mondays are seen as downers, having the unfortunate position of having to greet people from their eventful weekends. But the third weekend of January in Cebu takes the celebrating, merrymaking and partying several levels higher. Like, it easily scores at least a nine on the mild to wild scale.

So with a high like that, Post-Sinulog Monday does have the dangerous potential of hitting back harder if you’re not prepared to rebound with renewed zest. Check on how some of these Sinulog-busy people handle the Monday after Sinulog Sunday, making sure they win in life.

“I remember the day after Sinulog to be brutal. I know I am built like a tank but the weekend of sleepless partying with friends can truly wear you down. To combat the post-Sinulog stress, I make sure to take a whole day’s rest. I literally just stay in bed; sleep, watch TV and check social media. A good massage to relax my weary feet is a nice touch to help me bounce back and carry on with the rest of the week.” - Borgie Cabigas, TV Personality / Commercial Model / Emcee / Physique Competitor

“Sinulog Sunday is usually busy for us since we now serve brunch buffet in the morning and a la carte at night in Kayu. Since we’re closed on Mondays, I get to have some R&R while everyone else gets back to work! Haha! My way of de-stressing is by playing video games (“Batman Arkham” series, “Assassin’s Creed,” “Fallout,” “Arizona Sunshine”). It is kind of like your temporary escape from reality. And of course, when virtual reality isn’t enough, then I hit the firing range.” - Izzy Sy, Chef

“Post-Sinulog Monday is the time when me and my crew tend to celebrate for ourselves. One of the best things about living on this island is that there’s lots of other islands nearby that can serve as a great escape after all the hustle of the Sinulog week! Months of prep leading to a culmination of a few days can take its toll. Taking a break (and going island hopping) with your specials, is a definite must! We only want the best experience for all our guests and for us locals, too! Hope you had a great Sinulog!” - Paulo Varela, Event Specialist / Host

“There’s no harder Monday than the Monday after Sinulog. In the past years, I’ve found that the best way to cure the Sinulog hangover is a lot of coffee, a lot of greasy food—McDonald’s fries, if possible—and going back to sleep.” - Shari Quimbo, Professional Facebooker

“By far, this is the busiest January for me as I am making first moments happen through helping organize the ‘Sinulog Beach Festival’ by Klook, Cebu Pacific and Havaianas last Friday at Happy Beach, and being part of the Mardi Gras by joining Cebu Pacific’s float. Joining the parade and riding a float during the Sinulog was one of my childhood dreams. As a treat for myself, I filed a leave to get some rest. I’m planning to stay home to get more sleep, sip a glass of wine to destress and spend some quality time with family. I’m truly blessed and grateful for every opportunity that comes my way, and all of these are in honor to our beloved, Senyor Sto. Niño. Looking forward to Sinulog 2020!” - Danna Bacolod, Account Manager
