Bringing jobs to the countryside

TO generate jobs in the rural areas, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) 7 will train participants in a rural impact setup.

Frederick Amores, DICT 7 regional director, told SunStar Cebu that they aim to bring jobs to the countryside through the project.

“We will conduct trainings on the concept that happens in a business process outsourcing setup. The difference is, it’s in the countryside,” Amores said.

He said their benchmark locations include the northern town of Sogod and the City of Naga in the south.

“We are in talks with the different local government units (LGUs) for a training that we will conduct in their localities,” Amores said.

He said rural impact sourcing works when an individual hires employees to complete projects in online job site platforms.

“That is growing in the Philippines, and you can put it anywhere with internet connectivity where companies pay an hourly dollar rate,” he said.

But the employees should reside one to two hours away from Cebu City so that they won’t have trouble in terms of commuting to and from work.

“Our benchmark places that we agreed upon are the towns that are two to three hours from Cebu City,” he said.

Because of this, Amores said, they are boosting their connectivity in far-flung towns to realize the project.

In Cebu, the DICT 7 has activated 137 free Wifi sites under the Pipol Konek program, which aims to give free internet access to Filipinos nationwide.

“We’re trying to build that ecosystem by helping develop the local connectivity situation,” he said.

Interested applicants for the rural impact sourcing training should have basic know-how on computer tools and knowledge of the English language.

Amores said they are tying up with the Department of Trade and Industry 7 to train micro, small and medium enterprises on online selling. (JOB)
