Coast guard suspends boat trips to areas affected by Amang

THOSE who came to Cebu City to attend the solemn procession on Saturday, Jan. 19, and the Sinulog grand parade on Sunday, Jan. 20, would have to extend their stay if they lived in the path of typhoon Amang.

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) suspended boat trips to Northern Cebu, Eastern Bohol, Southern Leyte, Leyte, Biliran, Samar and Eastern Samar in the Visayas; and Agusan del Sur, Agusan del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Surigao del Norte, Dinagat Islands and Camiguin in Mindanao after a Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal was raised in these areas.

At dawn on Sunday, Amang was moving at 30 kilometer per hour (KPH) with a center wind of 45 KPH and gustiness of 60 KPH.

Amang will make its second landfall in Leyte and Samar on Monday, Jan. 21. It is expected to make landfall in Northern Cebu on Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 22, but as a low-pressure area, not a typhoon.

Al Quiblat, weather bureau Pagasa Visayas chief, said there was no storm signal from Buenavista to Valencia in Bohol and Metro Cebu and Southern Cebu. He said it would be up to the PCG whether to allow vessels to sail to areas without a storm signal.

Some 65 passengers, 15 rolling cargoes, eight boats and eight motorbancas were affected by the cancellation of trips.

The PCG will announce when travel to areas affected by typhoon Amang will resume.

Amang was monitored 175 kilometers southeast off Surigao City, Surigao del Norte around 4 p.m. Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Municipality of Bantayan suspended classes on Monday because of Amang.

The order issued by Mayor Christopher Escario covers all public schools from nursery to senior high in his jurisdiciton.

“I urge all Bantayanons to take all precautionary measures,” he said.

Danao City also suspended classes in all public schools. (WITH HBL OF SUPERBALITA CEBU/ KAL)
