Police intercept ‘smuggled’ sugar shipment

POLICEMEN have intercepted a shipment of some P165,000 worth of suspected smuggled sugar in Zamboanga City on Sunday, January 20.

Senior Superintendent Thomas Joseph Martir, Zamboanga City Police Office (ZCPO) director, said the shipment was intercepted around 9:10 p.m. Sunday at Sitio Picnic Ground in the village of Tugbungan.

Martir said the suspected smuggled sugar consisting of 75 sacks of 50 kilos each were intercepted aboard a truck en route for delivery to Elaine Makato at Sitio Picnic Ground.

Martir said Makato failed to present documents to show it was legal. The sugar was believed to have come from Thailand.

He said the estimated worth of the shipment was placed at P165,000. (SunStar Philippines)
