EVER since I learned how to write in cursive, that’s how I’ve always written for the rest of my time in school and after. Admittedly, my penmanship is not the best. It’s not the most legible for most people. But some people still state the obvious. I’m sure a lot of people have experienced this as well.
So let’s honor them, shall we? In celebration of National Handwriting Day, here are just five of the many comments people with bad handwriting get all the time:
“Can I borrow your notes? Wait. Never mind. I can’t read them.”
You ask to borrow my notes, only to indirectly criticize the quality of my handwriting. Wow! You sure know how to ask for a favor. Should I let you borrow my notes? Wait. Never mind. You’re rude.
“You write like a doctor.”
To be fair, you can’t really say if people say this as a compliment, an insult or just a plain observation. It does look a little (sometimes, a lot) like a doctor’s prescription. But why do you have to drag a dignified profession to compare to my handwriting with? What did doctors ever do to you?
“You write like a kid.”
Mind you, some kids have better penmanship than I do (I’m not really helping my case, I know). Thus, one’s age has no relation to the quality of his handwriting. People in their 20s and older with barely readable penmanship, can I get a raise of hands?
“Do you even understand your own handwriting?”
No. Sometimes, I don’t. And that’s my problem to worry about, okay? Especially when taking notes, you just want to catch up as fast as you can, even if it means the penmanship isn’t the best.
“Can you try writing a little better?”
Can you try minding your own business? I never asked you to write a little worse, did I? Let’s be real, no one ever got a prize for having the best handwriting. Believe me, there are more pressing things to make better in this world than how I write.
