MASANTOL -- The intensified implementation of the “Oplan Katok” of the local police here in relation to the existing Commission on Elections (Comelec)-imposed gun ban resulted in the recovery of unlicensed firearms.
Chief Inspector Nestor Bulatao, the town’s chief of police, said at least nine short and long firearms were either surrendered or confiscated from the owners due to their failure to renew the licenses.
The measure aims to ensure that all unlicensed firearms will properly be monitored and kept to avoid them from being used in crimes and illegal activities especially this election season, Bulatao said.
“The guns will still be owned by the respective owners, but will be kept for the meantime by the police until such time that they will be able to renew the licenses. But until the guns are unlicensed, they will be considered illegal,” he said.
Bulatao, however, clarified that licensed firearms are still covered by the Comelec gun ban and must not be brought anywhere unless owners secure a gun ban exemption from the poll body.
He said the local police are strictly implementing the gun ban and all violators will properly be apprehended.
“Let us be cooperative because your PNP (Philippine National Police) is implementing such measures to ensure your safety and security,” Bulatao told Masantoleños.
