Samante: Hope

SPORTS and the youth are a very potent combination in conveying a message of hope. Most of our established sports icons and leaders engaged in sports events once in their youth and they carry with them the lessons of their experiences which have since been translated into how they conduct themselves in their different areas of engagement today.

Senator Manny Pacquiao, with his successful title defense recently, is a constant beacon of hope for many Filipino youth especially those marginalized.

Congresswoman Pia Cayetano, whose recent football festival in the city, continues to inspire many young women athletes to continue pursuing their passion in sports. She is still a very active individual who still engages in sports just like the good senator.

Early experience contribute greatly in the development of the individual’s character and values. This is where we should capitalize on.

Providing the experience where character and values can flourish. We can begin with teaching the values of caring for the environment and not only become athletes but athletes who can advocate for environmental preservation. The core values of discipline, hard work and leadership we get from engaging in sports can be amplified further if it gets a practical application through active advocacies such as environmental preservation.

Children and the youth have been targeted from all sectors in society. They are the most vulnerable members of the community. They only reflect back what we, as adults, show them and let them experience. If we project positive values, these will also be reflected by the children. Same is true for negative values, the problem is that negative values always precede positive values most of the time.

It's time for us to take a more active participation in the development of our youths’ character and values. We all, private and government sectors, have to work hand in hand in providing an atmosphere and environment free from neglect and abuse. May we stop the vicious cycle of disregard for the young.

With the Davao Region Athletic Association (Davraa) Meet 2019 just around the bend, it is once again time for the Davao region youth athletes to showcase their talents in their various sports disciplines. It is also the time for everyone, the organizers and coaches, parents and supporters, to gather and ensure that these athletes get the best positive experience during their stint in these games.

Let’s make this Davraa Meet 2019 a week of camaraderie and a celebration of positive experiences for everyone, especially the youth who take over us in the future.
