Baguio centenarian honored

ANOTHER centenarian has been honored at City hall.

Concepcion Colcol has been recognized for her longevity by Councilor Lilia Fariñas, chairperson of the committee on social services, women and urban poor.

Colcol was born and raised here in Baguio City, living at DPS Compound, in their two-story wooden house which she built with her husband, Laureano from Aringgay, La Union a few years after their wedding.

They were married on December 19, 1933 through parental arrangement and were blessed with seven children.

The resolution, approved and carried by the entire City Council on Monday read “she was a housewife while her husband served in the military. She happily shares her fond memories of her husband, who, according to her had been a frustrated lawyer, if only they had the resources. She describes him to be a responsible, loving husband, and a true gentleman. He unfortunately passed away on August 12, 1972.”

Colcol is the third child among six siblings, her mother a seamstress from Sta. Barbara, Pangasinan, while her father is from Sto. Tomas, La Union, who worked in the maintenance department of Baguio Electric and Water Company, which prompted the couple to transfer to Baguio City where all their children were born and raised.

Despite being only able to finish Grade VI, she has since worked as a vegetable vendor at the Baguio Public Market.

Despite her age, she looks 10 years younger which she attributes to a healthy lifestyle, prayers and faith in God, going to mass and participating in adoration masses, which has been part of her daily routine when she was still able to move around by herself.

“Although she looks frail, she is of very sound mind, and her hearing very receptive considering her age. With her greying hair neatly tied in a bun by the nape, and wearing red-framed glasses, she displays a happy disposition, frequently smiles and laughs, and even expressed her gratitude for having received a visitor because she rarely goes out of the house or socialize,” the resolution adds.

Today, Colcol is taken cared of by her son, Lino, and as per her medical history, she was neither confined for any major illness nor is she on maintenance medications. However, she was diagnosed of hypertension and osteoporosis just this 2018, but in spite of her condition, she can still manage to do her bathing, toileting, eating and other mobile activities with minimal assistance.
