THE Davao City Social Services and Development Office (CSSDO) assisted 10 flood-affected families in Toril District affected by the heavy rains on Tuesday, January 22, due to Tropical Depression (TD) Amang.
CSSDO Toril district head social welfare officer (SWO) 3 Myrna Dadang reported that the houses of five families were destroyed while those of five other families were damaged.
“Kung muingon ta og totally damaged, wipe out gyud na. Walay bilin ang ilang balay. Kung partial lang, mga 50 percent or less ang damage sa baha (If we say totally damaged, that means the house was totally wiped out. Partial means 50 percent or less damage due to flood),” Dadang said in a phone interview Wednesday, January 23.
On Tuesday, the city government of Davao posted a warning on its Facebook Page with code yellow or alert level status in areas in Toril District as the heavy rains may cause the Talomo River to overflow.
Meanwhile, CSSDO Ugnayan head Maria Luz Farañal said that the city government of Davao has taken immediate action to help these families such as distribution of food packs.
“Naghatag mi og food packs, naa mi mobile kitchen tana but dili man kasulod sa area (We gave out food packs to the affected families. We were supposed to activate our mobile kitchen but it cannot enter the areas yet),” Farañal said.
She added that the families were already stable and are temporarily taking shelter with their relatives' residences.
The city government of Davao is expected to provide these families the follow-up support as some of these families have totally lost their homes.
“Magbinantayon gyud ta tanan labi na nga naa pa ta karon sa sige’g ulan. Magmaigmat, magtan-aw sa panahon especially sa mga flood-prone areas (Let us be vigilant especially that we have been experiencing heavy rains. Observe the weather especially in flood-prone areas),” Farañal said.
