Architects issue appeal to Palma

A LOCAL chapter of the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) has asked Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma to save the Patria de Cebu.

In a letter delivered last Tuesday, Jan. 22, the UAP - Datu Lapu-Lapu chapter of Cebu called for the preservation of the structure due to its great significance to the community. Architect Joseph Judilla, chapter president, wrote the letter that also said the building is physically sound and secure amid contrary opinions.

Architect Joseph Michael Espina, of the UAP chapter and University of San Carlos dean of Architecture, said demolishing the Patria has several implications. He said it’s not only about a building but also the contributions and stories that came from its construction. “Students from the University of San Carlos and the Society of the Divine Word priests before were part of those who contributed to the erection of the Patria,” he said.

The letter to Palma said, “We would like to add our voice to the voices of other concerned professionals and citizens in appealing to you to reconsider your decision.”

The matter is of “special concern” to the chapter since the lead architect of the structure, Teodoro Trinidad, “was a well respected member of the chapter, responsible for other significant architectural treasures in Cebu.”

Palma said in December that the demolition of the building will proceed to make way for an integrated retail, office and hotel structure. (VON DANIEL R. PLASENCIA AND JAYVEE A. GULFAN, USC INTERNS)
