LAST week was Sinulog Sunday. But as a big boxing fan, I was glued to the TV wondering seemingly, how a 40-year-old—an age ripe for retirement in most contact sports—is still finding ways to dominate a much younger and spry foe. For the past 17 years perhaps, I’ve done my best to follow the journey of a Filipino who, without knowing, has united a nation through political and social boundaries. What makes Manny Pacquiao different?
He continues to evolve
Not a lot of us can say the same thing about ourselves. Whether we like it or not, Manny has shown that he has the ability to change, and very quickly. From being a brawler to being a more tactical boxer, to those No Fear shorts, now wearing branded suits, Manny has shown that he has the ability to change for the better.
He has great habits
Most athletes tend to lose fitness when there are no matches and games to prepare for. Not Manny. He stays active playing basketball and what not on top of his duties as a senator. It also seems like he eats healthy Filipino food most of the time.
He believes in himself
He has shown time and again that he believes that he can overcome adversity, time and again. I still remember his defeats but more significantly I’ve always remembered how he’s bounced back.
He seeks out bigger challenges
Whether it’s in his sporting life, or perhaps political life, the man has shown that he challenges himself. He’s always seeking out the best opponents in and out of the ring.
He keeps himself grounded
We all know people who might be more arrogant and prideful but accomplished much less. Manny has always had this authentic charm around him and has shown that despite his success, he’s always kept his feet rooted in the ground.
I don’t remember any other Filipino who has brought pride and joy to the nation through his contributions in sports. Cheers to you, Sen. Pacquiao!
