19-year-old victim of ‘drug overdose’ laid to rest

Three hundred people from all walks of life attended the mass for the burial of 19-year-old Ashley Abad at the Sacred Heart Chapel on D. Jakosalem St. in Cebu City on Sunday afternoon, Jan. 27.

Ashley collapsed at a party held at the Cebu Business Park on Saturday night, Jan. 19. She died the next day, reportedly from a drug overdose.

Her father, Jose Alfonso “Joal” Abad, said they would fight to the end to get justice for his daughter.

According to him, they had dinner with the family of her boyfriend, Niel Spencer Tiu, before the two of them left for the show around 10 p.m. that night. Past midnight, Joal said he was surprised to receive a call from Tiu to inform him that they brought Ashley to the Perpetual Succour Hospital after she passed out.

When they arrived at the hospital, Joal said the doctor told them Ashley was fighting for her life because there was so much drugs in her system.

It was then that Tiu confessed to him that Ashley had taken Ecstacy, a party drug. However, Tiu did not say where she got the drugs from or how many pills she took, Joal said.

By morning, Ashley was in a coma. Joal said he sent Tiu away because he didn’t want to see the latter’s face plus Tiu’s parents were asking him to go home.

At 3 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 20, Ashley died.

Joal lamented Tiu and his parents’ refusal to cooperate with police in their investigation on his daughter’s death.

Police Regional Office 7 Director Debold Sinas has warned that Tiu will be considered a suspect if he continues to be uncooperative.

“If they will not cooperate, it’s up to them. Kay kung wala sila’y gitago, nganong sila di man mag-cooperate (If they have nothing to hide, why won’t they help us in the investigation)?” Sinas said.

Tiu’s parents had said there was no court order compelling them to answer questions from the police, adding that they still needed to contact their lawyer.

The crime laboratory personnel performed an autopsy on Ashley last Saturday morning, Jan. 26, to confirm if she died from a drug overdose.

Mabolo Police Station Chief Dindo Alaras said they could not proceed with their investigation until they received the result of the procedure.

Investigators plan to get the affidavits of six persons who were in the concert before Ashley collapsed.

Ashley was laid to rest at the Angelicum Garden in Mandaue City at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 27.
