THE Cebu City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CCENRO) will meet representatives of all hospitals in the city to get updates on the proper management of all hazardous waste next month.

The move, CCENRO chief Nida Cabrera said, was already scheduled even before medical wastes were seen along the shorelines in Lapu-Lapu City and the scheduled executive session that the City Council called for the matter.

“There will be a consultation on the proper management of hazardous waste and CCENRO will also introduce new system in the accreditation of all service providers,” she said.

The consultation meeting will also be attended by representatives from the Department of Health and the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB)-Central Visayas.

Before a service provider can get a permit from EMB-Central VIsayas as treatment, storage and disposal (TSD) facility, CCENRO will also have to check on them.

Cabrera said it is important to monitor the management of hazardous medical waste in all hospitals considering that the city has no disposal site at present that can accommodate the trash.

“It is important to monitor where these medical wastes go. There are also some that will dispose off their wastes along with the other garbage collected by the DPS (Department of Public Services) and that is not allowed,” she said.

On Wednesday, the City Council will also hold an executive session with EMB 7 Director William Cuñado, Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Central Visayas Executive Director Gilbert Gonzales and representatives of healthcare including hospitals and TSD facilities to discuss on the management side of their hazardous medical wastes.
