Tagum placed under state of calamity

TAGUM City declared a state of calamity after 15 of its 23 barangays were affeceted by the flash flood brought by the heavy rains in recent days.

The city government declared a state of calamity at 10:30 a.m Monday, January 28, after two or three barangays were badly affected by the flash flood.

"So far ang weather is okay na, back to normal but yung flash flooding were experiencing kay ang tubig sa silingan nga namo nga municipal like Kapalong ug Ascuncion pag mag subside sila padulong diri sa Tagum (The weather is getting better but the flash flood coming from the neighboring towns like Kapalong and Ascuncion are coming down to Tagum city)," City Mayor Allan Rellon said in an interview with SunStar Davao Monday.

Rellon said the barangays that were affected badly by the flash floods were Pagsabangan, Canocotoan, Libuganon, and Busaon.

"Ang ulan more than 24 hours nagpondo sa Tagum plus ang tubig sa silingan ning agi sa Tagum so murag doble ang pagtaas (Due to non-stop rain in the last 24 hours plus water coming from the neighboring towns contributed to the flooding here)," he said.

He added that estimated 10,000 families were affected by the flash flooding. The city government provided relief goods to 900 families on Sunday.

Rellon said they continue to provide affected families with relief goods and meals. The Department of Social and Welfare Development 11 (DSWD 11) also gave 3,000 food packs which were distributed at Barangay Mankilam.

He said they have also deployed security personnel at the evacuation centers for the safety of the people.

Rellon added that they will also provide medical assistance to the affected families and shelter assistance to those who lost their homes.
