2 killed, 3 wounded in Zamboanga mosque blast

TWO were killed and three others were wounded in a grenade explosion inside a mosque in Zamboanga City before Wednesday dawn, January 30.

Killed were Rex Habil, 46, a councilor in the village of Matatag, Lamitan City and Hadji Sattal Bato, 47, of Marketsite, Isabela City.

Injured were Palson Asgali, 44; Alnizkar Sabbaha, 30; and Jikilani Albani, 60.

In an initial report from the Police Region Office (PRO)-Zamboanga Peninsula, two unidentified suspect threw a grenade inside the mosque in Lagoy Diutay, Barangay Talon-talon around 12:20 a.m.

The suspects even managed to turn off the street lights in the said area before throwing the grenade inside the mosque where the religious leaders were sleeping, it added.

PRO-Zamboanga Peninsula director Chief Superintendent Emmanuel Licup said that they were still investigating the incident.

“We cannot speculate on the motive as of yet. Maaaring (it maybe) personal and (or) suspects riding on the Jolo incident,” Licup added.

The incident happened three days after the twin explosions in Jolo, Sulu cathedral where 21 people were killed while over a hundred others were injured including government forces and churchgoers. (With Bong Garcia/SunStar Philippines)
