San Fernando honors ‘Tatang’

THE City of San Fernando honored SM Supermalls founder Henry “Tatang” Sy Sr. for his invaluable contribution to the economic development of the city.

The Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) passed Resolution No. 2019-048, which conferred the posthumous recognition and appreciation to the late business tycoon.

The resolution cited Sy’s establishment and operation of three SM malls in the city—SM City Pampanga in November 11, 2000, SM City San Fernando Downtown on July 20, 2012, and SM City Telabastagan on May 18, 2018 — which helped spur development in the city.

“Sy, a philanthropist popularly known as ‘Tatang’ to all SM employees and its conglomerates, in his lifetime, was a paragon of discipline, dedication and hardwork, thus after years of struggling, Forbes Magazine named him the richest person in the Philippines,” the resolution read.

The SP resolution, passed on January 23 upon the motion of Councilor Ayzel Mari Grace N. Macalino duly seconded by all the SP members present, also expressed its heartfelt sympathy and condolences to the bereaved family of the late influential businessman who passed away on January 19 at the age of 94.

“The City of San Fernando joins the bereaved family of the late Mr. Henry Sy in beseeching the Almighty God to grant his eternal rest and peace in His Glorious Kingdom,” the resolution added.
