Camelot goes to the lake

BURNHAM Park offers a different Valentine day treat for lovers.

The Broadway Musical, “Camelot,” will be staged on Sunday atop a temporary stage at the center of Burnham Lake on Valentine’s Day.

Baguio boy, Chinggoy Alonzo, takes the reins in direction as well as playing “King Arthur” with Jonathan Badon as “Lancelot.”

The romantic musical is cast with the backdrop of weeping willows that line the Burnham Lake. The play will be free for the public, bleachers will be set up at the sides of the lake for those who would want to watch.

“This is going to be much more romantic and colorful than last year’s Phantom at the Lake [play],”

Anthony de Leon, Baguio Flower Festival chairman said.

The play is part of BFF highlights. “This is more fitting for Valentine’s day,” de Leon added.

The spectacle will utilize the park Lake building as stage area complete with sound system and lights, the stage will be bigger than last year’s. It now measures 36 feet by 28 feet.

Amboy Guevarra of the BFF secretariat said bleachers will be placed so viewers will not crowd around the periphery of the Lake and destroy of the plants surrounding it.

The stage will be set up at the Lake where the whole musical will take place. A horse will also be used for one of Lancelot’s scenes.

King Arthur is a legendary British monarch who, according to medieval histories and romances, led the defense of Britain against the Saxon invaders in the early 6th century. The details of Arthur's story are mainly composed of folklore and literary invention, and his historical existence is debated and disputed by modern historians.

“Camelot” is a musical by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederic Loewe, it is based on the King Arthur legend as adapted from the T. H. White tetralogy novel “The Once and Future King.”

Guevarra said at 6:00 p.m., a band will play at the Lake stage followed by the fluvial parade at 7 p.m. The play will then follow after the parade. At the musical’s end a firework display will be an added feature for park goers.
