Tell it to SunStar: On traffic, marijuana

You’ve The Right Of Reply

WE KNOW that our traffic problem is getting worse each year and we want to legalize the operation of motorcycles-for-hire, or habal-habal, to help address the problem. But how many will be operating on the road? It’s okay to have an alternative means of travel, but to what extent? Many drivers of habal-habal and other motorcycle-based transports do not have a license or insurance. They will end up becoming part of our problem if no limit will be set as to how many will be allowed to operate.

Another issue that needs to be address is the lack of protection for passengers. Do public utility vehicles like jeepneys or tricycles have insurance for their riders. Whenever there is an accident, the person with the deepest pocket seems to end up footing the bill, whether the person is in the right or in the wrong. I know this has happened before.

That’s why we should also consider passenger safety.

Let us look for the establishment of a transportation system in the future that eliminates the root causes of the traffic problem.

As for my two cents’ worth on the marijuana issue, there are two kinds of marijuana: medical and street marijuana.

If we legalize the latter, we risk opening the doors to “drug dealer heaven” where the younger population will try and use the drug until their bodies will crave for more and end up trying harder drugs to satisfy their need to feel high.

Here in the Philippines, the quality of the marijuana is of very little value and is composed mostly of leaves. Elsewhere, though, there are hybrids. These are stronger. Two hits from one such marijuana hybrid stick will surely get you off your feet. And it only takes the plant 90 days to start producing.

A way to control production is for a hospital to import marijuana from another hospital where it is legal. That will ensure that the Philippines does not become the source of the plant. Also, penalties should be stiff.

People, we must remember that marijuana is a weed that’s very easy to grow. So let’s wake up and do the right thing. Keep our children and the future drug-free.-Alfred Acopan
