Official seeks reconsideration of Agdao vendors

A BARANGAY official urged Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio to consider the situation of transient vendors affected by the modernization of Agdao public market.

Last January 19, 2019, more than 300 transient vendors were no longer allowed to sell along the roadside as it will be temporarily occupied by the legal vendors. This prompted clamor from transient vendors.

Agdao barangay councilor Roger Galedo told reporters Saturday, February 2, during Davao media forum that these are people who only have the market as source of income.

“Muhangyo ko sa mayor, kay ang atong mayor wa mana naglantaw na daghan og maligsan, akong hangyo na ipasabot lang pud sa mga transient vendors og ikosidera (The mayor may not see that there are a lot who are affected by this. We want her to explain the situation to the transient vendors and maybe reconsider them),” Galedo said.

“Luoy sila. Ang uban ana karaan na gyud, mao to nagbuhat sila og petisyon nga makig-istorya sila sa mayor pero wala pay update karon. Ang akong stand gyud is ipahiluna sila (Some of the vendors have been there for long that is why they made a petition to talk with the mayor. There is no update yet but I stand on the idea that they should be put somewhere where they can still continue to make a living),” he added.

While Davao City Council committee chair on games and amusement and government enterprises and privatization councilor Edgar Ibuyan Jr. suggested that these transient vendors apply for a temporary stall inside and become legal vendors, Galedo said these vendors cannot even afford the rental fee of the old public market and undoubtedly the fee of the modernized public market as well.

At present, some transient vendors found space to sell in some other roadside areas in Agdao while some are already selling right outside their houses.

Galedo said the local government should also listen to them and look into their situation.
