Cebu City announces cleanup drive for 3 rivers

THE Cebu City Government is in need of volunteers who will help clean up three waterways in the city. “Many people have been texting me, asking if we can have a cleanup drive for our rivers. Of course! As requested, the Cebu City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CCENRO) is organizing a cleanup drive starting with the Bulacao (Feb. 22), Lahug (March 9) and Guadalupe (March 16) rivers. Thanks to our friends in the private sector, free snacks will be provided to our volunteers,” Mayor Tomas Osmeña posted on Facebook. He said those who wanted to help could call CCENRO at 253-6362 or 411-0140 or message the Cebu City Public Information Office on Facebook. CCENRO Chief Nida Cabrera said they hoped to make the rivers livable for fish. Cabrera had said five rivers in the city’s urban barangays were considered dead due to pollution. These are the downstream areas of the Mahiga Creek in Barangay Mabolo, portions of the Butuanon River in Barangay Binaliw, Bacayan and Talamban and river systems in Barangays Lahug, Bulacao and Guadalupe.
