VANZANT Navales was laid to rest amid tight security at the Cebu South Memorial Garden in Talisay City, Cebu, Saturday afternoon, Feb. 2.
Five members of the Special Weapons and Tactics (Swat) group of the Cebu Provincial Police Office (CPPO) escorted the convoy together with Vanzant’s family, relatives, and friends.
The convoy started at the St. Peter Chapels on Imus Road, Cebu City where the requiem mass was held.
The Swat team refused to divulge who requested their presence.
Request for privacy
According to one member who refused to be named, police officers from the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) were also at the funeral home.
“Naa sad didto sa gawas ganina sa St. Peter CCPO police presence (The police were also outside the funeral home),” he said.
The Navales family refused to face members of the media and requested privacy during the burial rites.
Navales was one of three persons killed during a shootout in Barangay Sambag 1, Cebu City in the early morning of Jan. 21. The other fatalities were Edwin Bacaltos, 58, and his son Shaun, 22.
Navales’ older brother Vincent was also shot in the thigh.
The shootout stemmed from a long-running feud between Navales and Edwin’s other son Michael. (Wenilyn Sabalo, USJ-R Intern)
