Council wants garbage at terminals to be managed

TRASH management at key points in the city is being proposed.

The City Council approved a resolution encouraging all public transportation companies operating within the city’s jurisdiction to provide trash bins in their respective staging areas.

On a move by Councilor Leandro Yangot, the resolution aims to set into place management of trash in these areas.

“Responsible and effective waste management can help conserve the beauty of our city – the city above the clouds and closest to heaven which can be flawed by thoughtless disposal of waste, fly-tipping and senseless littering,” said Yangot.

Yangot added garbage receptacles properly placed and well maintained can dramatically improve the appearance of the city in contrast to having a beat up old trash containers that is well past its prime sitting right in the middle of everything on a daily basis.

The introduction of visible garbage containers and bins contributes to the decline of unwanted street litter and lessens the City’s street-cleaning problem. In fact, when a street is supplied with easy access to waste containers, overall maintenance of that street and neighboring areas stay cleaner and neater.

Adding education of the populace towards prevention of litter, particularly in major landmarks and places of interest within the City limits is still lacking despite the diligence and hard work of the City’s street sweepers patrolling these hilly areas daily and clean about 5 sacks of trash per shift under favorable conditions.

“It has been observed that the aisles, passageways and nearby premises in these staging areas are missing with garbage containers and worse, the overcrowding in the abovementioned areas not only makes it insufficient to permit movement for pedestrians but also a source of unsightly and frustrating garbage problems,” Yangot said.

The move was made to encourage private entities to join hands with the City in its effort to preserve what is left of the City’s clean and healthy environment.

“PUVs and PUJs plying along the City should also play a part in the City’s waste management and recycling programs,” Yangot added.
