WHEN it comes to air connectivity in Davao, there are still a lot of things that need to be done.

Davao City is presently connected to 15 destinations - 12 domestic and three international destinations. It is also currently being served by six airlines -- Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, Cathay Dragon, Philippines AirAsia, SilkAir, and XiamenAir.

Since President Rodrigo Duterte won in 2016, we saw a spike in the launching of new routes from Davao. This provided Dabawenyos and Mindanawons more access to different destinations. Investors and tourists also now find it easier to go to Davao City and its neighboring areas.

It is therefore exciting to note that Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines (PAL) are looking into the possibility of launching new routes between Davao City and other key destinations.

Both airlines have also started to receive new aircraft that will allow them to develop more routes. The delivery of the Airbus 321neo will allow both airlines to develop viable international flights to and from Davao City.

Recently it has been reported that the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. has sent a letter to Philippine Airlines to look into the possibility of launching flights between Davao City and Japan.

The Mindanao Development Authority has also reported that PAL Express, a subsidiary of Philippine Airlines, is looking into the possibility of launching regional flights within the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines-East Asean Growth Area.

Cebu Pacific is also seeing an increase in demand for Davao City as a destination. Therefore, it is studying to open more routes from Davao City.

With the developments in the global and Philippine aviation industries, we may be connected to more destinations in the next five or 10 years. This will mean more opportunities for Dabawenyos in terms of business, employment, and tourism.
