TODAY, in the generation of social media and the internet, we have easier access to news and other alarming videos that educate us. Among the many things that are present online is the terrible situation of the marine animals and the marine ecosystem primarily because of the non-biodegradable waste that humans mindlessly throw anywhere that end up in the ocean. What’s worse is that these plastics do not rot and stay in the Earth for even thousands of years. Even if we have already died, the plastics we used once for a very short time, say a shampoo sachet or a juice straw, still remain drifting in the ocean.

And so, with this dilemma different local entrepreneurs are now gearing up and improving their products in support of the advocacy against single-use plastic. Not only do these initiatives open up network towards environmentalist customers, it also allows them to learn more about their new products and to function with a genuine purpose beneficial to everyone.

In Davao City, one of these local businesses is the MNQ Homemade Cosmetics located at 2nd lot Talisay St., Juna Subd., Matina, Davao City. Their store is also not difficult to locate as it is very near the Philippine Women’s College.

The business is owned by Monique Layno with the focus and advocacy on helping reduce the plastic waste in the environment. In the same way, purchasing their products would be supporting local enterprises because MNQ Homemade Cosmetics also source out their raw materials locally.

Upon entrance to the store, one can smell the aroma of the unwrapped shampoo bars and facial soap bars that welcome the customers. Sales representatives friendly welcome the customer and are more than willing to answer their questions about the product. During my first visit, I was entertained by Jenny dela Cruz who was very helpful and knowledgeable of their products.

MNQ Handmade Cosmetics sell shampoo bars for only P180 and they are available in sampaguita, lavender, strawberry, grapefruit, iced coconut, peppermint, and tea-tree oil. Recently, they launched two new varieties, the moringa aloe vera and the charcoal.

As for the body and facial soap bars, they sell it for only P120. Customers can choose from iced coconut, bentonite clay, honey oatmeal, green tea cucumber, and unscented pineapple varieties.

Not only that, they also sell facial scrub, facial mask, hair and body oil, body lotion, and smoothing gel in reusable and handy glass jars. According to dela Cruz, if the customers come back and purchase with their own containers, they will be given a discount. She also added that a single shampoo bar can last an average of two months which is equivalent to about two big plastic bottles of shampoo.

Before leaving the store, I made sure to buy my own peppermint shampoo bar and honey oatmeal face and body soap bar. I had been using them for days now. Especially the peppermint shampoo bar, it lathers very well while emitting a good smell.

Because of the colorful and beautifully cut products, these are even perfect gifts for loved ones this Valentine’s Day, if you’re still thinking what to give your family, friends, or special someone. They would be more than happy to creatively wrap the items for you. Upon special request, they can also be used as giveaways to weddings, birthdays, and other special occasions.

MNQ Handmade Cosmetics also has an outlet inside Yellow Hauz, V. Mapa Street, Corner Mabini St., Davao City.
