42 LGUs join third season of Governor’s Cup

FORTY-two local government units from Cebu Province have confirmed their participation for the third season of the Governor’s Cup Inter-Cities/Municipalities Basketball Tournament.

This was confirmed during the event’s second coordination meeting at Cebu Provincial Capitol last Friday, Feb. 1, that was spearheaded by Cebu Provincial Sports Commission (CPSC) executive director Ramil Abing.

The defending champion Talisay City Aquastars will lead the cast in the province-wide grassroots tournament for players 21-Under.

The teams are Minglanilla, City of Naga, San Fernando, Carcar City, Sibonga, Boljoon, Samboan, Argao, Oslob, Alcoy, Santander, Barili, Asturias, Tuburan, Bogo City, San Remigio, Tabogon, Medellin, Tabuelan and San Francisco.

Also in the field are Danao City, Borbon, Sogod, Carmen, Tudela, Mandaue City, Consolacion, Cordova, Ronda, Malabuyoc, Moalboal, Ginatilan, Alegria, Catmon, Pinamungajan, Badian, Alcantara, Dumanjug, Santa Fe and Balamban.

“There are 42 confirmed teams already, and we’re waiting for the confirmation of about four LGUs,” Abing told SunStar Cebu in a text message.

The tournament organized by CPSC together with the Provincial Government of Cebu will tentatively open on March 9.

It was earlier announced that the teams in the third season will be bracketed based on their congressional district. Cebu Province has a total of seven congressional districts.

The champion in every district will move on to the second round, where teams play single round-robin with the top four advancing to the semifinals.

The overall champion will win P500,000, while the losing finalist gets P300,000. The third placer earns P200,000 and the fourth placer gets P100,000. (RSC)
