THE Department of Education (DepEd) Region 7 said it will prioritize the cleanliness of the billeting quarters for the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (Cviraa) meet set on Feb. 17 to 22 in Dumaguete City.

“In the Cviraa, we emphasize cleanliness to every division that will be billeted in a school. In fact, we have a committee for cleanliness which will be assigned to monitor every quarter,” DepEd Region 7’s assistant director Sal Jimenez told SunStar Cebu on Friday, Feb. 1.

Jimenez said this when asked about the safety procedures they will implement for the upcoming sporting meet that will be joined by elementary and secondary athletes from Central Visayas.

In Mindanao, a 12-year-old Davao Regional Athletic Association (Davraa) volleyball player succumbed to pneumonia on Thursday, Jan. 31. The doctor also discovered the girl had dengue.

Jimenez said the Committee of Cleanliness is tasked is to monitor every quarter and check if there is stagnant water where mosquitoes can breed.

Jimenez said that Dumaguete City has good facilities, having hosted the Palarong Pambansa in 2013.

“The superintendents and sports coordinators have visited the quarters and so far there are no concerns. The city’s facilities were enhanced for its hosting of the Palarong Pambansa,” he said.

Jimenez said screens were installed in the billeting schools right after the 2013 Palarong Pambansa. They will check if those screens are still in good condition.

“We were there last week to meet with tournament managers and coordinators to finalize the venues and the billeting quarters. There will be a technical conference on Feb. 6,” he said.

The opening ceremony will be graced by Secretary of Education Leonor Briones.

The regular sports to be contested in Cviraa are athletics, arnis, archery, badminton, baseball, basketball, billiards, boxing, chess, football, futsal, gymnastics, pencak silat, sepak takraw, softball, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, lawn tennis, volleyball, wrestling and wushu. (RSC)
