Catajan: Last of the happy’s

THIS week marks the end of festivities as Chinese New Year signals the last of the “happy” greetings we give.

It has been an abused term since the start of the holiday season last year, making pessimists cringe at the thought of being joyful despite a slew of unhappy reasons to break everyone’s bubble.

So, have you made a list of resolutions? Killed yourself in the kitchen trying to put together a spectacular meal? Finished your life savings? Used up all your office leaves?

Sorted all the recyclable gifts you received? Said thank you to all gift givers? Pestered all godfathers and godmothers to your children?

Have you been a good ninong or ninang? Or dodged the little ones the entire season?

Have you done a Marie Kondo to your home? Clutching inanimate objects and discerning if it sparks joy?

It’s funny how Marie Kondo's clean up advocacy spiraled to opposition by book hoarders when she suggested to keep a collection down to 30 pieces at the most.

Bookies raised a howl over the suggestion, shuddering at the thought of parting with their collection, sparking hate... not joy to the simple plan to declutter a home.

Kondo's exaggerated take on deciding what items to keep has been a subject of many memes, which I immensely enjoyed, after of course, watching her series on Netflix and cringing at the thought of decluttering my bookcase.

Clothes I can dispose, but books... that’s a different argument.

So I ended my short lived affair with Marie Kondo while I hoped she inspired a multitude to dispose of books which I could hoard.

Chinese New Year is the last of the “Happy’s” which I welcome after, Happy New Year, happy pasko, happy three kings and happy holidays.

I have in retrospect, indulged in the thought of silver linings after the sane but quite fairytale-like answer of our Miss Universe from the Philippines.

Yes, I am done.

Then comes the offer of a friend of mine who happens to be a Feng Shui expert to visit her, with the conversation leaning toward my animal sign which to my surprise, elicited a quite panicky response.

She wanted me to see her immediately, as my sign does not conform to the animal of the year and said crystals will have to be in order.

I had a packed day and failed to go, which makes me panicky now, as I think, I may have compromised my entire year by foregoing the visit.

I may call her again next week and hope remedies would be in order, to appease whatever ill awaits.

Last year, this is the same friend who saw me walking one day and called me to her shop of crystals and gave me a bracelet which was to be for the healing of my heart.

No questions asked, she just smiled and said I should wear the bracelet. Apparently, I looked sad enough to compel her to do this random act of kindness.

Well, happy Chinese new year to all and oh... yeah, there is still Valentines, another happy to that.
