With help of device, volume of trash drops by 15 tons

LESS garbage ended up in the seawater in Cebu City in the past weeks, thanks to an innovation adopted by the Cebu City Environment and Natural Resources Office (Cenro).

Cenro Chief Nida Cabrera said 15 to 20 tons of wastes were filtered by biofences placed in Mahiga Creek, along the shores of Pasil and Ermita, and in the rivers of Tinago and Tejero.

She praised the officials of Barangay Sabangdaku, Mandaue City for helping Cenro in cleaning Mahiga Creek.

Cabrera said Subangdaku Barangay Captain Ernie Manatad agreed to collect garbage from the portion of the creek that is on the side of Subangdaku.

Cenro gathers the wastes trapped by biofences twice per week using a dump truck assigned by the Cebu City Government solely for these sites.

When they are done cleaning the Bulacao and Guadalupe rivers, Cabrera said they will place biofences in five other rivers in the city. (FROM PAC OF SUPERBALITA CEBU, KAL)
