TAGUM CITY, Davao del Norte -- Davao City's swimming team ended its campaign on a high note by collecting eight more gold medals, four silvers and three bronzes yesterday as the defending champion city kept its solid number one position in the overall medal tally in the penultimate day of the Batang Pinoy 2019 Mindanao Qualifying Leg Friday.
The Dabawenyo swimmers, thus, raised their medal total to 17 golds, 14 silvers and 17 bronzes at the Davao del Norte Sports and Tourism Complex here to make up barely half of the overall tally of 42 golds, 31 silvers and 47 bronzes as of 2 p.m. Friday, February 8.
Rounding up the top five were General Santos City (21-25-27), Koronadal City (21-10-6), Davao del Norte (20-21-18) and Cagayan de Oro City (20-16-34).
Davao City also swept all four golds at stake in futsal competition Friday. So far, the city has six golds in arnis, four golds in athletics, four golds in taekwondo, four golds in karatedo and one each in chess, dancesports and tennis.
Liaa Margarette Amoguis, 11, a student of Abbas Orchard Montessori School, finished with five golds and one silver to emerge as the Mindanao leg's most bemedalled girl swimmer and the winningest Davao City athlete followed by archer Kristine Madelina Ibag who accounted for five golds and two bronzes.
Amoguis, youngest of three children of physicians Lowell and Cynthia, scooped the girls 12-under 200m butterfly gold and steered the city's girls 15-under 200m freestyle relay team to a golden finish yesterday. She was joined by elder sister Lora Micah Amoguis, Jodie Tangtatco and Maiki Samantha Gonzaga.
“I am not happy with my time. I really want to train hard for it (improve time) for the nationals and Palaro. I am very happy I've got five golds and one silver considering this is my last year in 12-under,” she said, adding that she is also proud of her relay teammates.
Juliana Marien Villanueva, 14, captured her third gold by topping the girls 15-under 400m freestyle. She totalled three golds and two bronzes while Pietro Dominic Requiza clinched his second gold after ruling the boys 12-under 100m backstroke.
Ivo Nikolai Enot (boys 13-15 100m backstroke), Alissa Ysabelle Lazarraga (girls 13-15 100m backstroke), Juan Alessandro Suarez (boys 12-under 200m butterfly) and the boys 15-under 200m freestyle relay team of Shem Gabrielle Bello, Chuck Brylle Amparo, Suarez and Matthieu Adrien Tao also clinched golds during the final day while silvers were from Lora Amoguis (girls 13-15 100m backstroke), Suarez (boys 12-under 50m freestyle), Maiki Samantha Gonzaga (girls 13-15 50m freestyle) and Lazarraga (girls 13-15 200m butterfly).
Maica Angela Garcia (girls 13-15 100m backstroke), Wilard Marvee Dayaday (boys 13-15 100m backstroke) and Charles Evan Ubina (boys 13-15) 200m butterfly went home with bronzes.
Meanwhile, Davao City's girls beach volleyball, boys and girls basketball and baseball teams will play championship games today in separate venues.
