A PORTION of the historic Liberty Shrine in Lapu-Lapu City is closed to tourists from Jan. 30 to April 5.

The closure is to allow improvements on the venue of the annual “Kadaugan sa Mactan.” The area of the shrine, also known as the old Mactan Shrine, will be expanded so that its more than 10,000 square meters will become 11,000 square meters or 1.1 hectares, and the shoreline will be extended by 10 meters.

Mayor Paz Radaza said she saw the need to dismantle railings, erase the landscape and transfer some trees. More people could be accommodated in a wider area.

The entrance to the shrine will be moved so visitors could see upon entry the statue of the country’s first national hero, Datu Lapu-Lapu. Project cost is P50 million.

On April 27, the city will observe “Kadaugan sa Mactan,” which showcases the heroism of Datu Lapu-Lapu in battling foreign invaders. (from FVQ of Superbalita Cebu, KAL)
