No aid for road crash victims

THE City Government of Davao reiterated that there will be no financial and medical assistance for road accident victims who are found to be driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs as they violated the city's law.

Few days ago, banners with words "Drink, Drive and Meet an Accident - No Lingap" in the city went viral as it reminded drivers of the 18-year-old Lingap Para sa Mahirap program. The policy against drunk drivers, however, was implemented only last year.

The program provides the city's constituents with medical assistance, food supplements, and burial assistance.

"No Lingap policy for drunk drivers is meant to help the city lower the incidence of vehicular accidents caused by drivers who drive even while under the influence of alcohol," committee on health chair Councilor Mary Joselle Villafuerte said in a text message to Sunstar Davao Sunday, February 10.

"Our Mayor, Sara Duterte-Carpio, who may have received reports of frequent accidents caused by drunk driving, wants this policy to become a deterrent, to those who continue this dangerous practice, knowing the city will no longer give financial assistance to violators," she added.

Last year, the mayor signed Executive Order No. 7, amending section 3 of EO 35 series of 2016 to further “strengthen the program’s processes and to ensure the efficient delivery of its services to qualified residents of Davao City.”

On February 4, Davao City Police Office (DCPO) received 12 brand new Kawasaki Versys 650 CC Motorcycle from the city government of Davao to boost its intensified security operations on “no drunk driving” and “no helmet” policy and other traffic violations in relation to the campaign against Unsafe Driving.
