Pacya: Aboitiz capacitates co-ops for sustainable livelihood

THREE cooperatives did not receive flowers and chocolates this heart month but a capacity building for their enterprise development.

Aboitiz Foundation implemented its annual capacity-building program to its partner organizations on the last day of January until the first day of February in Baguio City. The activity aims to strengthen and hone the management and leadership skills of its assisted partner cooperatives.

Three co-ops in Benguet attended the seminar on Cooperative Management and Governance.

Mr. Geronimo Torres, lead facilitator and senior project officer, said that their foundation is a corporate foundation of the Aboitiz Group that was established in 1988. It continues to pursue its mission of helping people help themselves through the implementation of corporate social responsibility interventions particularly in the places where the company operates.

“Our activities are centered on enterprise development and other areas like environment, education, health and disaster risk reduction and management,” he added.

Ms. Janet Lee, a co-op specialist and an accredited training provider, shared not only the best practices of cooperatives in Benguet but also the actual observations that make a cooperative fail. She stressed the importance of having core values that are defined by the general assembly for common understanding. Lee highlighted that the values will be used as indicators in the performance assessment tool of the cooperative.

In Cordillera, the partner co-ops of the foundation are Lamut Multipurpose Cooperative, Barangay Alapang Multipurpose Cooperative, both operating in La Trinidad and Thanksgiving Multipurpose Cooperative registered in Tuba, Benguet. Another women organization is also being assisted in the strawberry capital.

The objective of the enterprise development program is to improve community livelihood and employment opportunities of which the foundation is also giving microfinance to their partners. Aboitiz Foundation grants various asset donations if the partner group performs well on a given period.

The participants, especially Balmuco Manager Felina Mercoles and TMPC manager Emma Golocan, emphasized that the project is very instrumental in the sustainability of their coop’s business.

The local government unit of La Trinidad and Aboitiz Foundation are looking forward to a possible Memorandum of Agreement aimed at supporting more local entrepreneurs to be successful in their chosen line of business through a public-private partnership.
