PRO-Cordillera welcomes 20% fare discount

A TOP official of the Police Regional Office–Cordillera (PRO-COR) welcomed the newest memorandum of agreement for the fare discount for active uniformed personnel of the PNP, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG).

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) together with transport group signed a memorandum on Monday giving 20 percent fare discount for active-duty uniformed personnel of the three services for both city and provincial public utility buses, effective Monday, February 11.

“This is a welcome move by the DOTr in providing 20 percent discount to our uniformed personnel because it will be a big help in the expenses being incurred by our personnel,” said PRO-COR director Rolando Nana.

Uniformed personnel only need to present a valid ID as proof of active service to avail of the discount.

Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board Chairman Martin Delgra III signed the memorandum of agreement for the fare discount on Monday, February 11, with AFP chief General Benjamin Madrigal Jr, PNP chief Director General Oscar Albayalde, PCG commandant Admiral Elson Hermogino, and bus operators.

Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade in a statement was quoted as saying “in line with President Rodrigo Duterte's directive, this is our way of giving back to our soldiers, policemen, and Coast Guard servicemen who secure our nation and protect the Filipino people. We owe the peace and order and national security of our country to their inspiring service.”

Nana also said if other sectors would follow the move of the DOTr in providing a 20-percent discount for uniformed personnel, this will be welcomed.

“If discounts are given to senior citizens, why not to our active-uniformed personnel who is always willing to sacrifice their lives for peace,” Nana added.

The bus fare discount will remain effective indefinitely and will be reviewed one year later.
