THE top two private universities in the country have called on their respective communities to defend press freedom in the wake of Rappler CEO Maria Ressa’s arrest over a cyber libel case.

State-owned University of the Philippines Diliman, the top university in the country based on the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities, has yet to issue a statement.

Brother Armin Luistro, FSC, De La Salle Philippines president, issued a statement calling all Lasallians to support Rappler shortly after Ressa’s arrest on Wednesday, February 13.

“Let’s give our all out support as Lasallians to Rappler. Let’s defend press freedom. Let’s make our voices heard. Let’s vote with our feet and stand with Maria Ressa!” he stated.
